THE LOBSTER PROVES A HIT AT THE BOX-OFFICE

THE LOBSTER takes over 1 Million at Box-Office

With a remarkably small 2% drop week on week, Element Pictures production THE LOBSTER will surpass the €1 million mark in its second week of release, which is deemed a break out figure for any independent film. Opening to rave reviews THE LOBSTER, released as a joint venture by Element Pictures Distribution in Ireland and Picturehouse in the UK has now expanded to over 80 sites across Ireland & the UK as audiences embrace this art-house hit.

Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos’s previous best across Ireland & the UK was Dogtooth which grossed €208,000 over its entire theatrical run.

The LOBSTER’s stellar ensemble cast – headed by Colin Farrell and featuring Rachel Weisz, Lea Seydoux, John C Reilly, Ben Whishaw, Olivia Colman and Michael Smiley is expected to continue its fantastic run when it’s released in France this week on 126 prints where its Cannes Jury prize win will surely boost the films performance.

Speaking on the success, Element Pictures Distribution’s Andrew Lowe commented “We are really pleased with the response of audiences in Ireland and the UK to THE LOBSTER, whose positive word of mouth has helped propel it into an independent hit. Element Pictures Distribution have worked closely with our partners in the UK, Picturehouse, to launch the film into a very competitive market on the back of THE LOBSTER’s success in Cannes, and we are delighted to see UK and Irish audiences share the Cannes jury’s enthusiasm for the film.”

LENNY ABRAHAMSON’S ROOM IMPRESSES AT US BOX OFFICE

ROOM opens with highest screen average in the US, garnering stellar reviews.

ROOM had a hugely successful opening weekend at the US Box-Office where it was the top performing film in terms of per screen average (with an impressive $30,000 average per screen). The film is directed by Lenny Abrahamson, written by Emma Donoghue, based on her own novel and produced by Dublin based Element Pictures.

The film also generated incredibly strong reviews with a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with The New York Post saying that “ROOM is one-of-a kind, must- see experience.” The Seattle Times comment that you must “See it and be transformed”, with the LA Times adding that “there’s nowhere else I’d rather be than right in the moment with this singular film”. Rolling Stone write that “Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay will blow your mind” and Observer says that it’s “an unforgettable film that must be seen.”
Both highly suspenseful and deeply emotional, ROOM is a unique and unexpectedly tender exploration of the boundless love between a mother and her child under the most harrowing of circumstances. Irish audiences will have the opportunity to see ROOM when it’s released in Irish cinemas on January 15, 2016.

ROOM tells the extraordinary story of Jack (Jacob Tremblay in a breakout performance), a spirited 5 year-old who is looked after by his loving and devoted Ma (Brie Larson, Short Term 12, Trainwreck) Like any good mother, Ma dedicates herself to keeping Jack happy and safe, nurturing him with warmth and love and doing typical things like playing games and telling stories. Their life, however, is anything but typical—they are trapped—confined to a windowless, 10-by-10-foot space, which Ma has euphemistically named “Room.”

Ma has created a whole universe for Jack within Room, and she will stop at nothing to ensure that, even in this treacherous environment, Jack is able to live a complete and fulfilling life. But as Jack’s curiosity about their situation grows, and Ma’s resilience reaches its breaking point, they enact a risky plan to escape, ultimately bringing them face-to-face with what may turn out to be the scariest thing yet: the real world. ROOM also stars three-time Academy Award® nominee Joan Allen and Academy Award® nominee William H. Macy.

Element Pictures’ Ed Guiney (The Lobster, Frank, What Richard Did) produced ROOM with David Gross (What If, Goon). Executive producers are Andrew Lowe (The Lobster, Frank, The Wind that Shakes the Barley) for Element Pictures and Jeff Arkuss (What If) and Jesse Shapira (What If, Goon) for No Trace Camping. Emma Donoghue, Rose Garnett (Film 4), Tessa Ross (Film 4), and David Kosse (Film 4) also serve as executive producers.

ROOM is an Element Pictures and No Trace Camping production, in association with Film4, Telefilm Canada, and the Irish Film Board. A24 will distribute the film in the US, and Elevation Pictures is distributing the film in Canada. UTA handled the domestic sale. FilmNation Entertainment handled all international sales.
