SECOND FILM FROM ELEMENT PICTURES ADDED TO PROGRAMME FOR TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Yorgos Lanthimos’ THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER marks the second film from Element Pictures invited to play at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, following the previous announcement on July 25th, that Sebastian Lelio’s DISOBEDIENCE would be added to the programme.

Speaking on the selection at TIFF, Element Pictures Producer Ed Guiney commented that “it’s a real honour to have two films at this year’s Toronto Film Festival with the North American premiere of THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER and the world premiere of DISOBEDIENCE. We are incredibly proud of both films and look forward to screening them to the wonderful Toronto audiences.”

THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER is continuing on its international festival run, having picked up the award for Best Screenplay at the closing ceremony of the 70th Cannes Film Festival.

Lanthimos and his regular collaborator, Efthymis Filippou, co-wrote the script, which was shot last Autumn in Cincinnati, Ohio. THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER sees Colin Farrell reunite with Lanthimos following their collaboration on THE LOBSTER  also produced by Element. He stars as Steven, a charismatic surgeon forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart when the behaviour of a teenage boy he has taken under his wing takes a sinister turn. Nicole Kidman also stars as the wife of Farrell’s character, along with young, Irish actor Barry Keoghan (’71 and DUNKIRK), Raffey Cassidy (TOMORROWLAND), Sunny Suljic (THE UNSPOKEN), Bill Camp (12 YEARS A SLAVE) and Alicia Silverstone (CLUELESS).

The film is financed by Film4 and New Sparta Films along with the Irish Film Board. The project was developed by Element Pictures with support from Film4. HanWay Films is worldwide sales agent with A24 on board as US distributor following its successful release of THE LOBSTER last year.

DISOBEDIENCE marks the English language debut of Sebastian Lelio best known for the hit Chilean film GLORIA (2013). It tells the story of Ronit (Rachel Weisz), who upon returning to her Orthodox Jewish home after the death of her rabbi father, stirs up controversy when she shows an interest in an old childhood friend. The film also stars Rachel McAdams (SPOTLIGHT) and Alessandro Nivola (AMERICAN HUSTLE).

DISOBEDIENCE is financed by Film 4 and Film Nation. It is an Element Pictures/ LC6 Productions / Braven Films production. Film Nation is the worldwide sales agent for the film.

DISOBEDIENCE is directed by Sebastián Lelio and written by Sebastián Lelio and Rebecca Lenkiewicz. It is produced by Frida Torresblanco, Ed Guiney and Rachel Weisz.

THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER AND DISOBEDIENCE will be released by Curzon in both Ireland and the UK.

THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER’S YORGOS LANTHIMOS AND EFTHYMIS FILIPPOU WIN BEST SCREENPLAY AT THE 70TH CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

Element Pictures is delighted to announce that Yorgos Lanthimos and  Efthymis Filippou have picked up the award for Best Screenplay at the closing ceremony of the 70th Cannes Film Festival for THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER. The award was shared with Lynne Ramsay’s YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE.

 

THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER marks Element Pictures seventh production or co-production in official selection at Cannes in recent years and its fourth win with Lanthimos’ THE LOBSTER winning The Jury Prize in 2015, Ken Loach’s THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY taking home the Palme d’Or in 2006 and Lenny Abrahamson’s  GARAGE winning the CICAE Prize at Directors’ Fortnight in 2007.

THE LOBSTER won the Jury Prize in Cannes in 2015 and was recently nominated for an Academy Award ® for Best Original Screenplay. DOGTOOTH, another of Lanthimos’ projects, won Cannes’ Prix Un Certain Regard in 2009, later receiving an Academy Award ® nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

R O O M Receives Triple Golden Globe® Nominations

Element Pictures Production ROOM continues on its award path with Golden Globe® nominations across three leading categories including Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Screenplay for and Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama.

The 73rd annual Golden Globe® awards will take place on January 10, will be hosted by Ricky Gervais and is viewed in more than 160 countries worldwide.

Speaking on the nominations, Director Lenny Abrahamson commented “”I want to thank the HFPA for this incredible honor. For an independent film like Room to be nominated for Best Picture for the Golden Globes is an extraordinary vote of confidence and a tribute to the amazing work done by all the talented people involved in the production. I am particularly delighted for Brie Larson and Emma Donoghue. Their unique artistry is being recognized today.”

ROOM has been a huge hit since it played to standing ovations at its world premiere in Telluride earlier this year and scooping the prestigious People’s Choice award at the Toronto International Film Festival. ROOM has also received multiple nominations for the Independent Spirit awards and this week picked up the best international independent film award at the BIFA’s aswell as nominations for Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay for the Screen Actors Guild awards.

ROOM stars Brie Larson (Short Term 12, The Spectacular Now), Jacob Tremblay (The Smurfs 2, Somnia), Joan Allen (The Bourne Supremacy, Nixon) and William H. Macy (Shameless, Magnolia). Emma Donoghue adapted the screenplay from her book, the award-winning international phenomenon, ROOM.
Told through the eyes of five-year-old-Jack (Tremblay), ROOM is a thrilling and emotional tale that celebrates the resilience and power of the human spirit. To Jack, Room is the world…. It’s where he was born, it’s where he and his Ma (Larson) eat and sleep and play and learn. But while it’s home to Jack, to Ma it’s a prison. Through her fierce love for her son, Ma has managed to create a childhood for him in their ten-by-ten-foot space. But as Jack’s curiosity is building alongside Ma’s own desperation – she knows that Room cannot contain either indefinitely.

ROOM will be released in Ireland on January 15, 2016
