IRISH PRODUCTION ‘THE FAVOURITE’ RECEIVES TEN ACADEMY AWARD® NOMINATIONS

Tuesday January 22 2019: There was much to celebrate in Element Picture’s Dublin offices today as their latest film THE FAVOURITE was nominated for an incredible ten Academy Awards®. Following her Golden Globe win, lead actress Olivia Colman continues to impress with another nomination with best supporting actress noms for both Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone.  Irishman Robbie Ryan was honoured with a nomination for cinematography and Yorgos Lanthimos is up for best director.

THE FAVOURITE also secured a nomination in the hotly-contested best picture category. This is Element Picture’s second best picture nomination at the Oscars, following their ROOM nomination 3 years ago. Element Pictures is the only Irish company to ever have secured two best picture nominations and with 10 nominations for THE FAVOUIRTE  it is now the most nominated Irish film ever at the Oscars.

Other nominations were Original Screenplay for Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara ,Production Design for Fiona Crombie and Alice Fenton, Film Editing for Yorgos Mavropsaridi and Costume Design for Sandy Powell.

Element Pictures’ Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe commented “We are in LA and jet lagged so we were wide awake and ready to watch the awards at whatever ungodly hour it was. Its incredible to get this recognition – maybe because the film has been so challenging to pull together over such a long time its all the sweeter. Huge congratulations to all the nominees and we are especially delighted that Yorgos got the nod for director – more than with most movies, its all down to him. We are dying to get back to Dublin to celebrate with our gang at Element who have all been such brilliant fellow travellers on the journey. And of course huge gratitude to Fox Searchlight, Film4 and Waypoint.”

The 91st Oscars® will be held on Sunday, February 24th, 2019, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

THE FAVOURITE has been a critical and box-office hit since it premiered on the Lido in Venice last August where it scooped the Grand Jury Prize and Olivia Colman won Best Actress. In December the film dominated the BIFA’s (British Independent Film Awards) with a record-breaking 10 awards on the night and is currently a box-office smash in the US grossing over $22m to date. The film opened in Ireland and the UK on January first and went straight to No2 in the box office that day.

THE FAVOURITE stars Olivia Colman and Academy Award winners Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone and marks the third collaboration between Element Pictures and director Yorgos Lanthimos following award-winning films THE LOBSTER and THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER.

The film was shot by Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan and was partly post produced in Dublin. It is currently playing in Irish cinemas, released through Fox Searchlight.

THE FAVOURITE is written by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara and is produced by Ed Guiney and executive produced by Andrew Lowe for Element Pictures. Other producers include Ceci Dempsey, Lee Magiday and Yorgos Lanthimos. The film is an Element Pictures/Scarlet Films production for Fox Searchlight, Film4 and Waypoint.
