Element Pictures Productions Bound For Top International Film Festivals

Element Pictures are delighted that two of its major upcoming productions are set to screen at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, which is widely considered to be one of the top film festivals in the world, with a further announcement today that Jerzy Skolimowski’s 11 MINUTES, which is co-produced by Element will compete at the illustrious 72nd Venice Film Festival.

Lenny Abrahamson’s much anticipated ROOM will have its Canadian Premiere this September in Toronto.  The film stars Brie Larson (Short Term 12, The Spectacular Now), Jacob Tremblay (The Smurfs 2, Somnia), Joan Allen (The Bourne Supremacy, Nixon) and William H. Macy (Shameless, Magnolia).  Emma Donoghue adapted the screenplay from her book, the award-winning international phenomenon, ROOM.

Told through the eyes of five-year-old-Jack (Tremblay), ROOM is a thrilling and emotional tale that celebrates the resilience and power of the human spirit. To Jack, Room is the world…. It’s where he was born, it’s where he and his Ma (Larson) eat and sleep and play and learn. But while it’s home to Jack, to Ma it’s a prison.  Through her fierce love for her son, Ma has managed to create a childhood for him in their ten-by-ten-foot space. But as Jack’s curiosity is building alongside Ma’s own desperation – she knows that Room cannot contain either indefinitely. ROOM will be released in the US on October 16 through A24.

Following its hugely successful world premiere in Cannes this summer where it picked up the prestigious Jury Prize, Yorgos Lanthimos’s  THE LOBSTER will continue on the festival circuit with its North American Premiere now confirmed for Toronto.  THE LOBSTER stars Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz with a supporting cast including Léa Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, John C.Reilly, Olivia Colman and Ashley Jensen.

THE LOBSTER is a love story set in the near future where single people, according to the rules of The City, are arrested and transferred to The Hotel.  There they are obliged to find a matching mate in 45 days.  If they fail, they are transformed into an animal of their choosing and released into The Woods.  A desperate Man escapes from The Hotel to The Woods where The Loners live and falls in love, although it is against their rules. THE LOBSTER will be released in Irish & UK cinemas on October 16.

Skolimowski’s 11 MINUTES will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, which runs from September 2nd to September 12th.   The film stars Richard Dormer (Good Vibrations, ’71, Game of Thrones) in the lead role of a film director. It follows the same 11 minutes in the lives of several different characters; young and old, prosperous and destitute. Some story elements surprisingly intertwine; others follow their own intricate rhythm.

Speaking on the selections, Element Pictures Producer Ed Guiney commented that “it’s a real privilege to work with such visionary directors and to bring all of these incredible films to such top-class festivals is something we are incredibly proud of.”
