Yorgos Lanthimos’ THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER marks the second film from Element Pictures invited to play at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, following the previous announcement on July 25th, that Sebastian Lelio’s DISOBEDIENCE would be added to the programme.
Speaking on the selection at TIFF, Element Pictures Producer Ed Guiney commented that “it’s a real honour to have two films at this year’s Toronto Film Festival with the North American premiere of THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER and the world premiere of DISOBEDIENCE. We are incredibly proud of both films and look forward to screening them to the wonderful Toronto audiences.”
THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER is continuing on its international festival run, having picked up the award for Best Screenplay at the closing ceremony of the 70th Cannes Film Festival.
Lanthimos and his regular collaborator, Efthymis Filippou, co-wrote the script, which was shot last Autumn in Cincinnati, Ohio. THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER sees Colin Farrell reunite with Lanthimos following their collaboration on THE LOBSTER also produced by Element. He stars as Steven, a charismatic surgeon forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart when the behaviour of a teenage boy he has taken under his wing takes a sinister turn. Nicole Kidman also stars as the wife of Farrell’s character, along with young, Irish actor Barry Keoghan (’71 and DUNKIRK), Raffey Cassidy (TOMORROWLAND), Sunny Suljic (THE UNSPOKEN), Bill Camp (12 YEARS A SLAVE) and Alicia Silverstone (CLUELESS).
The film is financed by Film4 and New Sparta Films along with the Irish Film Board. The project was developed by Element Pictures with support from Film4. HanWay Films is worldwide sales agent with A24 on board as US distributor following its successful release of THE LOBSTER last year.
DISOBEDIENCE marks the English language debut of Sebastian Lelio best known for the hit Chilean film GLORIA (2013). The film also stars Rachel McAdams (SPOTLIGHT) and Alessandro Nivola (AMERICAN HUSTLE).
DISOBEDIENCE is financed by Film 4 and Film Nation. It is an Element Pictures/ LC6 Productions / Braven Films production. Film Nation is the worldwide sales agent for the film.
